Mr. Srinivasa Ramanujan, the greatest self-taught mathematician, was born on 22 December 1887. He is known as the Greatest Indian Mathematician in the history of mathematics. Ramanujan has given practical solutions in the field of education and ensured the freedom of doing extraordinary in the minds of students. 
He has shown his interest in mathematics in his early student life and proved his ability in front of his teachers and classmates. His ability and sense of understanding problems make him proactive in the field of mathematics. His curiosity about mathematics provided solved theoretical solutions, and due to his short life, some unsolved mathematical formulas still await a new Ramanujan.

Ramanujan: Early Life 

Born in a Very Poor Brahmin family on 22 Dec 1887, Surrounded by religious activities at home, Ramanujan was a straightforward child and unable to speak for three years, which created social fear in the minds of his parents. But his entrance to the school was ear and mind-opening for the teacher as he put up some never-asked questions like the presence of the first human life on earth, distance from earth to sky, etc. His friendly behaviour in the class provides a lovely atmosphere among his classmates. His popularity on the school premises set an example for other students to study and over to teachers for interest in teaching better. Once, his Headmaster delivered a message that time-bound exams were not applicable to Ramanujan as his ability to solve the question paper was in quick time. 

Being an outstanding student in Math and English in high school exams, he was awarded a Scholarship. His special interest in math only makes him fail in the 11th class and stop the scholarship amount, resulting in a financial crisis at home and at the study level. He had given tuition to earn money and faced a very tough time for almost five years. Due to India’s un-freedom, besides poverty with no job and faith in the almighty, God could not make him weak and continuously invent new formulas. He got married to Janki in 1908.

Mr Srinivasa Ramanujan is known as the Greatest Indian Mathematician in the history of mathematics.  He has gathered about 3900 results, including equations and identities, in his short life. He has shown his interest in mathematics in his early student life and proved his ability in front of his teachers and classmates. During the search for a job in Chennai, he met with Deputy Collector Shri V Ramaswami Ayyar, who identified Ramanujan’s hidden talent because he was a mathematics scholar. Collector arranged a Rs. 25.00 per month scholarship, and Ramanujan published his first article,’’ Properties of Bernoulli numbers,’’ and the same was re-published in the Journal of Indian Mathematical Society. During that time, the distance between Indian and English scientists for work, thoughts, and living style was so great, and the research mission could not have been established without the help of foreigners. 

With the help of Indian Professor Sheshu Aiyar, Ramanujan contacted the famous disciplined mathematician Professor Hardie. After solving the mathematical question, Professor Hardie started a golden era in Ramanujan’s life. Professor Hardy recognised Ramanujan’s talent and rare personality and invited him to England for further invention. In England, Ramanujan was honoured as a member of the Royal Society, which was great during Indian un-freedom. Ramanujan will remain remembered for his main contribution to mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series and continued fractions. The entire world is still waiting to solve his many mathematical problems. Only 33 years in age, on 26 Apr 1920, Ramanujan’s untimely death shocked all and was a loss to everyone connected to education.

Srinivasa Ramanujan, the great Indian Mathematician, had few opportunities to prove himself in the field of Mathematics due to his very short life. The main contributions to mathematics are – Prime Value, Conjecture, Theta functions, Constant, Number Theory, Magic Square, Number 1729, Identities, Theorem Sato Series, Complex Analysis, Infinite Series, & Continued Fractions. Although his invention during the Indian Un-freedom era, the statement, ‘’One Man is enough to make nation’s pride,’’ absolutely suited his personality.

  • Ramanujan received his early education in Madras, attending a local school.
  • His passion for mathematics developed at a young age, and was mostly self-taught.
  • Despite struggling in other subjects, he excelled in mathematics and won numerous academic prizes in school.
  • However, his singular focus on mathematics became a disadvantage in college, leading to his eventual dropout.
  • Undeterred, he continued to pursue his passion, compiling a collection of mathematical theorems, ideas, and concepts.
  • In 1912, while working as a clerk at the Madras Post Trust Office, he received encouragement from his manager, S.N. Aiyar, to correspond with G.H. Hardy, a renowned mathematician at Cambridge University.
  • In 1913, he sent a seminal letter to Hardy, enclosing 120 theorems as a sample of his work.
  • Hardy, along with fellow Cambridge mathematician J.E. Littlewood, recognised the brilliance within Ramanujan’s work, acknowledging it as a testament to his innate genius.

22 दिसंबर 1887 को एक अत्यंत गरीब ब्राह्मण परिवार में जन्मे, घर में धार्मिक गतिविधियों से घिरे रामानुजन एक साधारण बच्चे थे और तीन साल तक बोलने में असमर्थ थे, जिससे उनके माता-पिता के मन में सामाजिक भय पैदा हो गया। लेकिन स्कूल में उनका प्रवेश शिक्षक के लिए कान और दिमाग खोलने वाला था क्योंकि उन्होंने कुछ ऐसे प्रश्न पूछे जो कभी नहीं पूछे गए जैसे कि पृथ्वी पर पहले मानव जीवन की उपस्थिति, पृथ्वी से आकाश की दूरी आदि।

Srinvasa Ramanujan Death

In 1919, Ramanujan’s health took a turn for the worse, prompting his decision to move back to India. Despite his remarkable mathematical accomplishments, his physical well-being began to deteriorate. Upon his return to India in 1920, his health worsened, casting a shadow over his promising future. Sadly, at the young age of just 32 years old, Ramanujan’s life was cut short by his declining health. His untimely death marked the end of a brilliant mind and left the mathematical world mourning the loss of one of its most extraordinary talents.

  • He has put up a true invention because no one in the future could present a false invention.
  • His personality could not stop being awarded as a fellow of the Royal Society during British empowerment.

  • At the age of 32, he created 3,900 sensation results in the field of mathematics.
  • A museum containing photos, letters, and other art crafts has been set up in Chennai in memory of Ramanujan and his family members.
  • His masterpiece named ‘’Lost Notebook’’ was discovered in the Trinity College library by mathematician George Andrew in 1976. 
  • December 22 is celebrated as the National Mathematics Day for the commendable invention presented by Ramanujan.
